Patrilocality and Missing Women
نویسندگان
چکیده
Recent scholarship has documented an alarming increase in the sex ratio at birth in parts of East Asia, South Asia and the South Caucuses. I argue that parents engage in sex selection because of patrilocal norms that dictate elderly coresidence between parents and sons. Sex ratios and coresidence rates are positively correlated when looking across countries, within countries across districts, and within districts across ethnic groups. I examine the origins of patrilocality, and find it is most common among ethnic groups which practiced intensive agriculture. I conclude with an examination of how parents respond to changes in public pension programs. * Corresponding author: [email protected]. "Asia's missing women" as a problem in applied evolutionary psychology?
In many parts of Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, women and children are so undervalued, neglected, abused, and so often killed, that sex ratios are now strongly male biased. In recent decades, sex-biased abortion has exacerbated the problem. In this article I highlight several important insights from evolutionary biology into both the origin and the severe societal consequences of "Asia...

متن کاملSex-biased migration in humans: what should we expect from genetic data?
Different patterns of mitochondrial and Y-chromosome diversity have been cited as evidence of long-term patrilocality in human populations. However, what patterns are expected depends on the nature of the sampling scheme. Samples from a local region reveal only the recent demographic history of that region, whereas sampling over larger geographic scales accesses older demographic processes. A h...

Background and Objectives: Missing data exist in many studies, e.g. in regression models, and they decrease the model's efficacy. Many methods have been suggested for handling incomplete data: they have generally focused on missing outcome values. But covariate values can also be missing.Materials and Methods: In this paper we study the missing imputation by the EM algorithm and auxiliary varia...
